Many agree that our Inland Southern California region is severely underfunded when it comes to cultural arts programs and grants. Native American artists and culture bearers are often among the underfunded. And that means the greater community also often isn’t served.
Now along comes $3.8 million in grants via the California Arts Council.
The money is aimed at lifting up community arts, individual arts, and the cultural arts in “high priority” Riverside and San Bernardino counties. This includes Native American cultural arts, both traditional and contemporary.
They call the program Creative Core. Read more HERE.
The qualifying categories for grant money are broad — “community participation” is one. You don’t need to have a 501c3 nonprofit organization to apply, they say.
Individual artists and creators also can apply. And Native American Culture Bearers, whether singing, telling traditional stories, teaching cultural ways and traditions to others, teaching language, sharing cultural arts, and more, also qualify for this grant money.
So, how do you apply? How does it work? First, the grantors say they want to hear from us. They want to know what we care about the most.
We need everyone to come and tell them.
The Riverside Arts Council has been hosting “listening sessions” in both counties, including four in Riverside County — one in Jurupa Valley near Riverside, one in Perris, one in San Jacinto. And one is planned at Dorothy Ramon Learning Center, 127 N. San Gorgonio Ave., Banning, from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, February 25, 2023.
The organizer, Riverside Arts Council, is calling for artists to display and sell their art at the February 25th event, and give demos.
Native American artists and culture bearers, please join in!
From the Riverside Arts Council: "HEADS UP: Upcoming listening session! Join us for our Regional Listening Session in Riverside County!
“This session is for all artists, residents and community-based organizational leaders in the region serving Hemet, San Jacinto, Idyllwild, Calimesa, Cherry Valley, Beaumont, Banning, Anza in Riverside County.
“This will serve as an open conversation about local priorities and pressing community needs. We want to hear from you about what you care about most and ways we can support through the projects and efforts of the Creative Corps funding, and would also like to learn about barriers you’ve had to applying for past grant programs. All of your feedback will help shape the grant guidelines and projects that will get funded!
