Dorothy Ramon Learning Center’s Native Voices Poetry Festival for six years has explored the richness of Southern California Native American cultures, celebrated the human voice in all the arts, and invited all to discover and be inspired by a deeper understanding of our region, its beauty, and its uniqueness. Participants create their own poetry and art.
We look forward to hosting Native Voices Poetry Festival again in our Gathering Hall, once all is well again. Meanwhile this seems a perfect day for News from Dorothy Ramon Learning Center to share some of the Festival’s art and poetry, most of it here from the children of Morongo School on Morongo Reservation.
Also, a reminder: at 7 p.m. Friday, November 6, 2020, discover some beautiful storytelling through the online video presentation of 16-year-old Sophia Madrigal’s play, “Wildflower: Indigenous Spirit.” Get your invitation HERE.
Found Poems
At our 2017 Native Voices Poetry Festival, children at Morongo School shared their “found poems.” These use language discovered in a non-poetic context, and turn it into poetry that is new and beautiful. We invite you to try your own found poems, and share with us at News from Dorothy Ramon Learning Center: EMAIL.
Celebrating the Mountain
Our February 2020 Festival theme celebrated San Jacinto Peak, its animals, birds, plants, and everyone’s relationship to this mountain considered sacred by Native American people from homelands for many miles around. Here is part of Morongo School’s art exhibit:

Creatures of the Night
This illustration of a bat prompted Ernest Siva (Cahuilla-Serrano), president of Dorothy Ramon Learning Center, to share one of his favorite lullabies with you:
Thank you!
May you also find and share beauty in your world today. Thank you to all for your support! Pat Murkland, Editor. Nov. 4, 2020.
